Eccosmo ecosystems are fascinating, self-contained miniature ecosystems that can thrive with minimal effort. To ensure your ecosystem remains healthy for a long time, there are a few important points to consider. In this post, you will learn everything about optimal placement, lighting conditions, and temperature – as well as what you can do if you have any questions.

1. The Right Location: Where Does Your Ecosystem Feel Most Comfortable?
To maintain a stable and healthy balance in your ecosystem, carefully choose its location. Here are some tips:
No direct sunlight: Do not place your ecosystem in direct sunlight, as this can overheat the water and cause uncontrolled algae growth.
Not near a window: Your ecosystem should not be placed directly near a window, as it requires only minimal light.
Avoid strong temperature fluctuations: Keep it away from radiators, air conditioners, or other sources that could cause sudden temperature changes.
2. The Right Lighting: Natural or Artificial?
Light is crucial for the biological balance of your ecosystem. The algae living inside produce oxygen and serve as food for the shrimp.
Minimal light required: Your ecosystem only needs very little light to maintain a stable balance.
No direct lighting necessary: If your ecosystem is placed in a darker area, normal room light is usually sufficient.
Avoid too much light: Excessive algae growth is often a sign of too much light. If your ecosystem turns green, reduce the lighting duration or change its location.
Natural vs. artificial lighting: Natural light contains a broad spectrum that promotes algae growth, whereas artificial light sources are often more controlled. Cool LED lighting can help limit algae growth, while warmer light sources (such as incandescent bulbs) may encourage it more.
3. Optimal Temperature: Not Too Warm, Not Too Cold
Temperature plays a crucial role in the well-being of your ecosystem:
Ideal temperature: Between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius (64-77°F).
No extreme conditions: Temperatures below 15°C (59°F) or above 30°C (86°F) can disturb the delicate balance.
Avoid temperature spikes: Ensure that your ecosystem is not placed in areas with significant temperature fluctuations (e.g., on a windowsill above a heater or next to an air conditioner).
4. Maintenance and Care: Does My Ecosystem Need Cleaning?
One of the best things about an ecosystem is that it is self-sustaining and requires almost no maintenance. However, there are a few things you can do:
Do not shake or move it: An ecosystem is a delicate balance. Avoid strong movements, as they can cloud the water and disrupt the shrimp's habitat.
Monitor algae growth: A slight green tint is normal, but excessive algae growth may indicate too much light.
Condensation: If excessive moisture forms inside the glass, it is a sign of temperature differences between the inside and outside of the ecosystem. This can happen even with minor fluctuations and is usually harmless.
Cleaning with the internal magnet: The manual includes an external magnet, which allows you to attract the small magnet in the gravel of the ecosystem. This can be used to remove deposits from the inner glass. Cleaning is not necessary but can be done if needed.
